CityLab@Inria – Participating teams

CityLab@Inria brings together Inria teams that research on the various building blocks composing the smart city systems of systems, from large-scale sensing and subsequent management and analysis of the knowledge gathered:

  • CLIME  studies data assimilation techniques so as to enhance available urban simulation models with knowledge acquired though sensing. While multiple models are of interest and need to be maintained in our cities, CLIME concentrates on the study of models associated with the smart city services that will be developed in relation with CityLab@Inria. Target models include noise pollution, air quality and CO2 mapping.
  • DICE studies the impact of urban data sensing on the city governance, in light of the complex dependencies between technological, social and economic systems of the digital age. The DICE team is interested in the impact of intermediation platforms on our economy and political organization. DICE contributes its expertise for an analysis and understanding of the impact of smart city technologies on the overall city governance.
  • FUN studies advanced solutions enabling Future Ubiquitous Networks composed of RFID, wireless sensor and robot networks, and thus form the backbone of the smart city sensing system. FUN contributes its knowledge in energy-efficient solutions for wireless protocols so as to support effective social and physical sensing.
  • MIMOVE studies middleware solutions for urban-scale mobile sensing with a special emphasis on merging physical and social sensing as well as leveraging Crowd-Xing. MIMOVE leverages its latest research in large scale, mobile participatory sensing in the IoT to investigate mobile distributed middleware solutions supporting combined social and physical sensing. The team is more largely interested in bringing middleware solutions that foster citizen engagement, which has to do with enabling participatory sensing but also easing the development of applications by and for the citizens themselves.
  • MYRIADS investigates advanced cloud solutions for the Future Internet, which are critical for the processing of urban data. MYRIADS leverages its experience in cloud computing and Internet of services while expanding its research activities to the design and implementation of cloud services to support crowd-Xing applications and mobile social applications.
  • SMIS designs and validates new storage and indexing models, query execution and optimization techniques, transaction protocols, access and usage control models and enforcement techniques, oriented toward data privacy preservation, especially where data or metadata are embedded within secure and personal devices. SMIS contributes privacy-by-design architectures based on secure smart objects so as to guarantee privacy properties to citizens, which is critical for ensuring that urban-scale sensing contributes to social sustainability and does not become a threat.
  • URBANET brings expertise in the study of urban-scale networks that integrate the various wireless networks that are now deployed in our cities. URBANET brings its know-how in capillary networks that combine the various networking technology at hand, which is a critical requirements of the urban environment. Further, the experiments carried out within CityLab@Inria will allow a better understanding and hence significant advancements over the state of the art in the area of capillary networking.
  • WILLOW studies visual object recognition and understanding that is expected to become a major data source of smart city systems. WILLOW contributes with the development of a general framework for finding, describing and quantifying dynamic visual patterns.
